Science of Survival actually explains the concept of theta and thetans pretty well. It's a book you read on the PTS/SP course.
It's been some years since I've read it, but from my understanding and from my interpretation, there is theta which is basically the creator of the physical universe. Theta has no form, no wavelength, no mass, no frequency... it's just static. Theta's basic purpose is to "conquer" the physical universe.
A thetan is basically a "unit" of theta. The way I always understood it, you, the thetan, a unit of theta, are part of a bigger whole. I don't know about other Scientologists, but I always figured that God or the Supreme Being referred to in the 8th Dynamic to be all theta in its infinite entirety.
Anyway, so there's theta, and there's entheta, which is theta which has been enturbulated by "colliding too hard with the physical universe and experiencing pain." And every thetan is packing around some entheta to a greater or lesser degree. The more "entheta" a thetan is, the more "aberrated" it is.
LRH wrote about something called the "contagion of aberration." Basically, if there's a little bit of theta surrounded by a bunch of entheta, that theta will turn to entheta. But if there's a little bit of entheta surrounded by a bunch of theta, then that entheta will turn to theta. The more entheta a thetan is, the lower on the Tone Scale it will be. The more free theta a thetan has, the higher it will be on the Tone Scale.
