The most important thing, in my opinion, is that you think for yourself and become self-determined in your own beliefs, regardless of how closely they match with any other persons ideas or belief system.

If you try and understand other people's viewpoints, and how and why those ideas might have arisen, even if you disagree with it, then you will often achieve a more complex understanding of a situation.
